Don’t worry, you are certainly not the only one with those annoying symptoms, such as genital itching, irritation, poor vaginal lubrication, vaginal dryness and irritation, and even pain during intercourse (dyspareunia). These are actually quite common symptoms in women of different ages and are often related to estrogen deficiency and to vaginal atrophy. These symptoms, which tend to worsen over time, can appear with a drop in estrogen due to menopause (whether physiological, surgically induced or resulting from localised cancer treatment) in addition to temporary symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats. The discomfort resulting from these physiological changes associated with alterations of the vaginal mucosa can interfere with the quality of life and affect a relationship, and can cause low sex drive and lack of libido in some older women due to testosterone deficiency.

Female Genitals Disorder

Urogenital atrophy occurs following a reduction in the production of oestrogen by the ovaries, due to menopause or as a result of the treatment of some gynaecologic cancers.

This condition involves gradual thinning of genital epithelial tissues, vaginal and vulva mucosa, which reduces its thickness and becomes more fragile irritable and exposed to trauma.

Loss of cell glycogen (which contribute to vaginal flora balance) and reduced epithelial blood flow are factors that lead to morphological tissue alterations that add up to physiological and functional alterations:

  • vaginal dryness and lack of moisture
  • decreased vaginal discharge
  • increased vaginal pH level, exceeding 5.0
  • vaginal lactobacilli decrease and increased microbial antagonism
  • inflammation and burning sensation
  • itching and localised vasocongestion
  • leucorrhoea or abnormal vaginal discharge
  • sensitivity of the vaginal walls to friction and mechanical stress
  • levelling of vaginal rugal folds (due to collagen loss and reduced production)

The symptoms related to atrophy of vaginal mucosa and of the lower urinary tract during sexual intercourse can alter genital sensations or worsen existing symptoms, such as reduced sex drive and lack of orgasm.

Up to not long ago, this was attributed to the inevitable ageing process and therapies and treatments to improve vaginal physiology and fight disorders that worsened over time were not widespread.

Today, more and more women turn to medicine to improve the tone and functionality of that particular area. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor, who can guide you through the choice that best meets your requirements, based on self-knowledge, clinical judgement and personal experience.

The New Laser Technique

If you are having the symptoms commonly related to vaginal atrophy, you can now obtain a new balance through the recovery of genital physiology and relief from symptoms you suffer from every day.

MonaLisa TouchTM promotes the recovery of genital mucosa balance in a safe and painless way, through methods similar to those used to slow down face skin ageing.

The laser’s effect on vaginal mucosa tissue stimulates the production of collagen, improves functionality of the treated area, and restores proper blood flow.

MonaLisa Touch is natural, safe and mini-invasive, it restores tone to tissues and increases blood flow and lubrication. In one word, it naturally normalises the physiology of the vaginal walls.

MonaLisa Touch is one of the most advanced vaginal photorejuvenation techniques and relieves the most troublesome symptoms associated with vaginal atrophy: poor vaginal lubrication, vulvar itching, dryness, heaviness, and even pain during intercourse can become a memory of the past.

If you want to regain the harmony of your womanhood, do not hesitate to ask your doctor about MonaLisa TouchTM.

Up until not so long ago, the end of fertility would start a gradual biological and sexual decline. Now that life expectancy after menopause exceeds 30 years, women’s wellbeing and quality of life have become a sensitive issue, which has increasingly drawn the attention of the scientific community. As you probably already know, not all menopausal women are the same. The symptoms and risk factors change from person to person, starting from the onset age of this stage of life, with the world average being approximately 50 years.

There are many options to relieve the symptoms associated with climacteric, ranging between HRT (hormonal replacement therapy), localised hormone therapy, phytoestrogens, gynecological surgery and laser techniques.

Treatment Guide

A guide to the MonaLisa Touch treatment

MonaLisa TouchTM is a vaginal rejuvenation treatment (not to be confused with aesthetic treatments) based on a special CO2fractional laser, specifically created for this particular application.

This mini-invasive laser-assisted procedure is performed in a medical practice, on an outpatient or day-hospital basis; it does not involve incisions or sutures and it requires few minutes for every session.

The treatment DOES NOT usually require anaesthesia; however, if the patient prefers, an anaesthetic cream can be used.

Results can be noticed after the first session; normally we recommend a full cycle of 3 sessions  4-6 weeks apart. However, the number of sessions can change according to the level of vaginal atrophy to be treated. Only your doctor/gynaecologist can evaluate and recommend the best suited treatment plan after a careful examination.

Beneficial actions

The laser’s stimulation action on collagen improves the state of the mucosa that lines the vaginal walls and promotes rehydration and functional recovery of the vaginal tissues.

Thanks to its action on factors that determine dryness, fragility and loss of mucosal elasticity, this regenerating treatment can eliminate troublesome itching, irritation and pain, which become particularly acute during intercourse. As a result, most of the treated patients report a substantial improvement in their quality of life and in their sexual life.

The CO2 fractional laser allows effectively treating even cases of loose vagina, caused by loss of mucosal tone, if local muscles or vaginal prolapse are not involved.

This stimulation and rejuvenation process involves cells and tissues and takes a few weeks to be completed. Results will be more noticeable approximately one month and a half after the end of the treatment.

Risks for patients treated with Monalisa TouchTM are minimal. Most women report temporary side effects, slight redness or swelling: some discomfort that usually disappears after one or two days of rest.

During the healing process, it may be recommended to avoid lifting weights or some activities, such as taking a hot bath, or physical exercise. Your doctor will give you specific indications for a speedy recovery.
